Abstract: 

Dr. Goto was deeply involved in establishment of key organizations in the region, such as APNG (Asia Pacific Networking Group), APNIC (Asia Pacific Network Information Centre), and APAN (Asia Pacific Advanced Network). He played an important role for establishment of Multilingual Domain Name (MDN), later Internationalized Domain Name (IDN), which reflects diversity of culture and languages in different countries and region. His efforts, under cooperation with many stakeholders, was not limited to technical standardization area. He established management structure as well as actively engaged in promotion through activities in MINC (Multilingual Internet Names Consortium) and Japanese Domain Names Association (JDNA),

In April 1996, he became a professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Waseda University, Japan. He was a founding member of Asia Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) in 1997 and served as chairman from 2004 to 2007. He also chairs the Cybersecurity Research & Development Strategy Committee of Japan’s National Information Security Center. He was induceed in Internet Hall of Fame Global Connector in 2017.

In the interview, Dr. Goto shared his early life, his study in Stanford, Internet origins in Japan, JUNET, his experiences in APNIC, his works on multi-lingual domain name and the future trend for Internet.
