    Fang Xingdong

    CEO, CyberLabs
    Initiator of internet Oral History Project


    Fang Xingdong (Ph.D., Tsinghua University) is Director of Center for Internet and Society Communication University of Zhejiang. He is also the founding director of the International Internet Institute at STU. His recent research focuses on cyberspace strategies, cyber security, cyber economy and new media.


    As one of China’s earliest and most important cyberspace experts, Fang is a founding member of Digital BBS, China’s first Internet research institute that was established in 1998. Fang founded ChinaLabs.com in 1999, which is the first non-government think tank devoted to the research in Internet governance and policy-making related to cyber affairs. Since its establishment, ChinaLab has played a growingly role in promoting a better understanding of the shared cyberspace among regions, industries, institutes, organizations and various systems. As the board chairman and CEO of ChinaLabs.com, Fang leads a team of 30 full-time researchers and over 100 affiliate scholars working on over 30 research projects in cyberspace strategies and security each year.


    Fang is the first person who introduced blog to China, and founded BlogChina.com in 2002, where he remains as the editor-in-chief. In 2007, Fang started qqw.com, China’s first Internet financing platform for its middle and small businesses. He is the author of 25 books in new media, cyber culture and IT industries. He has also published a series of articles and research papers (over 10 million words in total) in cyber security, cyber strategies, new media, IT innovations, cyber culture and IT industries.


    In recent years, Fang and his team has completed the following research projects: The impact of social network sites on China’s economy and society; New changes in cyber security after the Snowden incident; The influence and functions of China’s online opinion leaders; Google globalized platforms influence China’s information security; The rise and management of China’s NGO entities on the Internet; A comparative study of Sino-U.S. cyberspace governance; Rethinking the national strategies in global cyberspace; A comparative study of Sino-U.S. power and ability in cyberspace; Reflection and news solutions in cyberspace governance after the exposure of the PRISM program.


    Professional experience  


    In 1996, Fang started to engage in the emerging internet industry;

    In 1999, Fang founded CyberLabs which is the first non-government think tank devoted to the research in Internet governance and policy-making related to cyber affairs, where he remains as chairman;

    In 2002, Fang founded BlogChina.com which is the first website of Web 2.0, where he remains as the editor-in-chief;

    In 2007, Fang started qqw.com which is China first Internet financing platform for its middle and small businesses;

    In 2012, Fang appointed as the chairman of Internet and Social Research Center in Zhejiang University of Media and Communications;

    In 2016, Fang joined and appointed as the dean of the Cheung Kong School of Journalism Communication in Shantou University, and meantime established the International Internet Institute in Shantou University;

    In 2016, Fang established the Journal of Cyber Affairs in conjunction with the International Institute for the Internet, Shantou University;
