OHI interview with Bob Frankston
OHI project interviewed Bob Frankston in 17th July, 2019 in Boston.
Bob Frankston is the co-creator with Dan Bricklin of the VisiCalc spreadsheet program and the co-founder of Software Arts, the company that developed it.
Bob Frankston lives in a pretty house full of electronic devices made by himself. We interviewed him in his sci-fi attic which make sounds from time to time.
Bob Frankston recalled MIT's hacking culture and Visicalc's entrepreneurial process, took us to the PC industry in the early 1980s. Visicalc was the pioneering work of the entire PC software industry, which led the rise of the entire industry. Even the software giant Microsoft really developed after Visicalc. In 1988, it surpassed Lotus, another follower of spreadsheet software, to become the leader of the software industry.
