OHI interview with David P. Reed
OHI project interviewed David P. Reed in 15th July, 2019 in Boston.
David Reed was involved in the early development of TCP/IP, and was the designer of the User Datagram Protocol (UDP). He was also one of the authors of the original paper about the end-to-end principle, End-to-end arguments in system design, published in 1984.
Mr. David Reed served as the Vice President of R&D and Chief Scientist at two pioneering personal computer software companies—Software Arts, Inc. and Lotus Development Corporation.
As the chief scientist of Lotus, David witnessed the most chaotic and lively uprising development process in the entire PC industry. As one of the hottest software vendors, Lotus deeply invovled in operating system contest among Microsoft, Apple and IBM, and hardware contest among Apple, IBM and Compaq PC. The competition, compatibility and adaptation between platforms is undoubtedly one of the biggest tasks and problems of the chief scientist. In the end, he couldn't stand disputes, especially anti-monopoly testimony anymore, then left Lotus in 1992.
