ChinaLabs (renamed as CyberLabs now) has been the earliest and most influential internet think tank since it was founded in 1999 when the internet first came to China.

We Experience

CyberLabs joined China’s first wave of internet development in the 1990s, led the second wave by introducing blog to China and other Web 2.0 skills. Now in the third wave, we’re making new contribution to an expanded cyberspace.

We Converge

CyberLabs, upholding the “Open, Sharing and Innovating” principles, has converged leading scholars and think tanks, and team them up with governments, academia, hi-tech industries and civil groups in coping with cyber challenges.

We Study

CyberLabs is devoted to studying internet governance, cyber policies and internet innovation and development. It has completed over 200 research reports.

CyberLabs explores new solutions for its over 300 clients by offering recommendation and solutions to cyber challenges.

CyberLabs bridges the differences between countries, regions, industries, and organizations by building up a platform for better interaction between governments, academia, industries and civil groups.

We Record

The Oral History of the Internet (OHI), first launched in China in 2007, aims to build a virtual monument by documenting personal narratives from the 500 Internet Pioneers around the world.

Over the past 18 years, CyberLabs has participated in all the major events that influenced the internet development in China.

1998 - Co-founded "Digital Forum," China’s first internet research group, and Nicholas Negroponte was hired as its consultant.

August 1999 - Dr. Fang started “ChinaLabs,” aiming to be the country’s top think tank on the internet. The book “Rise to Fight the Microsoft Hegemony” was published.

2000-2001 - Started iClub, a monthly internet club that had become the first platform connecting entrepreneurs and investors; ChinaLabs was selected as one of the “New Promising Companies” Dr. Fang was one of the “Top Ten Youth in the IT Era” and "Top Ten Experts Influencing China’s Internet Development."

2002 - Introduced the concept of "blog" into Chinese. Started China's first blog site – blogchina.com, and started China's "Web 2.0" wave;

2003 - Initiated the discussion on the how high-tech enterprise should go global, influenced Chinese high-tech enterprise`s global strategies development. Dr. Fang published "Blog - Fire-Stealer in E-Age” and be honored as "China’s Blog Godfather"

2004-2005 - Introduced global-oriented strategies to China's tech intellectual property; Researched monopoly of multinational corporations in China; Conducted “China’s Software Piracy Rate Annual Survey" with State Intellectual Property Office challenged the integrity of BSA results, showed the world China`s Software piracy situation objectively and thoroughly for the first time.

2006-2007 - Launched the Internet Sentiment Index with National Bureau of Statistics of China; Launched the Oral History of the Internet project;              Hosted the “International Forum of Internet Innovation Leaders ”.

2008-2009 - Issued the "Survey Report on China High-tech Field Monopoly Situation in 2008" and promoted the investigation process of "Anti-Monopoly Law" in the field; hatched Global Network Project which focused on the Internet financial innovation;         

foreseen Internet finance fever

2010 - Studied BAT impact to the socio-economic with MIIT, and raised the opinion "Internet has become strategic infrastructure that could influence the national economy and social stability”

2011-2012 - Issued “Report on China’s Internet Monopoly in 2011”draw Ministries` attention to Internet Monopoly

Proposed the concept of “Real-Time Web “as the characteristic of the Third Internet Wave 

Held the 10th anniversary of the blog, selected "The Top 100 Bloggers Influenced China"

2013 - Advocated the establishment of Chief Internet Security Officer (CSO) system;

Participated in and attracted attention to research on cyberspace strategy

2014 - Organized the event of 20th anniversary of Chinese Internet, published "Cyber Power – Game between China and the United States in Cyberspace “and “Oral History of the Internet in China”;

Attended the first World Internet Conference and the 7th UCIIF ;

2015 - Built a communication channel with USITO, attended the 8th Sino-US Internet Forum, joining President Xi’s delegation and visited the United Stages. Invited to attend the Second World Internet Conference.

2016 - Started the Journal of Cyber Affairs (Chinese version) by teaming up with the International Institute for the Internet, Shantou University; Attended the ICANN in Hyderabad and IGF in Mexico;

Launched the “The History of the Internet” project, aimming to produce 100 documentaries on internet pioneers and enterprises, ideas and concepts, technologies and innovations

2017 - Renamed ChinaLabs into CyberLabs, and started the Journal of Cyber Affairs in English, which was published through JSTORE.
